- One law I find to be outdated is the death penalty sentence because I feel like punishing crime should focus on rehabilitation, making amends to those who were hurt, and possibly reintegrating criminals back into society once they have been successfully rehabilitated. Apart from that, I find the existence of death penalty to be a very scary thing because it can easily be abused by those in power in order to keep certain minorites oppressed. There have already been several stories of black people who were falsely accused of crimes and were given death penalty. However, it is obvious that there is no way to reverse the outcome of this, which is why I think it should be abolished in general. Apart from that, I find that certain sentences, especially those regarding stealing for necessity, are too harsh, considering that these people are only committing crimes to survive. Meanwhile, some politicians or businessmen who have stolen or exploited people have earned billions and are still free and not incarcerated. This reflects that American society values the exertion of power as a means of disciplining, instead of addressing problems at its core. I would also say that it shows us the brutality of the system as well.
- Contrary to what people say most of the time, I do believe that technology has allowed us to be more connected, albeit in a different manner. While it is true that some people have resorted to prioritizing their phones and gadgets even when they are out with other people, I still think that in general, technology has built bridges for us to befriend anyone in the world. Technology has made it possible to see people virtually despite stay-at-home orders, allowing us to continue working or giving us a chance to see our loved ones. Technology has also allowed us to keep in touch with the lives of others through posts and various platforms to call or message. In fact, technology has also paved the way for people to date through the creation of dating apps and websites. While it is certainly a different experience from bonding with people face-to-face, there is no doubt that technology has provided us platforms to connect in various ways without having to travel thousands of miles across the world. This is why I believe that technology, when used correctly, helps us stay connected, form new friendships, and allows us to keep our place in the hearts of our loved ones.
