This week you read about identity, socialization, and family. You studied master statuses, gender and race socialization, conformity, deviance, and crime. Then, you watched a documentary on advertising. It’s title, “Advertising at the Edge of Apocalypse,” foreshadowed the message that the writing team set out to communicate. According to Dr. Jhally, capitalism has led to the “commercial takeover of culture.” Using the vocabulary from this week’s readings and your understanding of what society is, how socialization impacts identity, and the role of family, community, and media in the socialization process, do you agree or disagree with Dr. Jhally? Maybe you agree with some points but disagree with others? I know I do. In your paper, please explain why you agree or disagree using examples from your own experience.
