Personal ads are short descriptions about a person written for the purpose of finding a romantic partner. In your evaluation of the three ads, you will consider the following questions: • What are the similarities? • What are the differences? • What does the content indicate about values within each culture? Culture #1 The two ads below were placed in the San Francisco Chronicle, a typical general daily newspaper appearing in a large, metropolitan city: 28 SWM, 6’1”, 160 lbs. Handsome, artistic, ambitious, seeks attractive WF, 24-29, for friendship, romance, and permanent partnership. Very attractive, independent SWF, 29, 5’6” 110 lbs., love fine dining, the theater, gardening and quite evenings at home. In search of handsome SWM 28-34 with similar interests. Culture #2 These second two ads were placed on the same day in the India Tribune, a California newspaper with a readership of primarily immigrant families from India: Gujarati Vaishnav parents invite correspondence from never married Gujarati well settled, preferably green card holder from respectable family for green card holder daughter 29 years, 5’4”, good looking, doing CPA. Gujarati Brahmin family invites correspondence from a well cultured, beautiful Gujarati girl for 29 years, 5”8”, 145 lbs. Handsome looking, well settled boy. Compare and contrast the content of the ads between the two newspapers. What are the similarities? What are the differences? Be sure to include terms that you have learned in class as you discuss the similarities and differences. You should include a minimum of two similarities and two differences. In addition to identifying the similarities and differences, explain what these comparisons demonstrate about what is valued within each culture. There are several similarities available in the two ads on culture #1. In the two advertisements recorded in Culture #1, the initial two similarities I saw were the individual interests introduced in every ad. While the individual in the principal advertisement portrayed himself as "creative" and intrigued by a "companionship, sentiment, and long-lasting partnership"; the individual in the subsequent advertisement likewise recorded interests of her own that she looks for in a man. One more comparability that stood apart between these two promotions was how everyone expressed actual attributes like age, tallness, and weight. One distinction, notwithstanding, was the age range inclination that each individual was keen on. One more distinction was the individual interests expressed in the ads. While the man in the primary promotion is imaginative and eager, the lady in the subsequent advertisement was into high-end food, theater, cultivating, and remaining at home. They appeared to be changed in characters just by noticing their inclinations. In Culture #2, the two ads show a closeness in who has made the individual notices. Another considerable similarity is that the families in the two ads come from a similar geographical location. Although they come from a similar spot, there are two or three contrasts between every ad. The main advertisement shows that the family is looking for a reported man to go with their recorded girl. In contrast, the family in the subsequent promotion is more centered around discovering somebody dependent on appearance. One more distinction in every ad is in the training perspective. The lady in the main advertisement is running after becoming insured in the CPA (Certified Public Accounting), while the man in the subsequent promotion isn't instructed in anything. Next to checking on the two commercials, it can be seen that the two families focus on and esteem the worldly elements of a relationship like legitimate documentation and actual appearances and disregard common interests like the ones introduced in the notices of Culture #1.
