DESCRIPTION OF VIDEO 1 (guiding ideas):

A one page and ½ (can go up to 2 pages) overview of what this video is about. Include information about what you observed that you believe are related to what we’ve learned about culturally responsive approaches to learning. Also write what were the approaches that got them to write. What are some points that kids make about writing? Keep in mind some major concepts from the course that we’ve covered, e.g., funds of knowledge, culturally responsive teaching that you might have noticed. Refer to Bennett and how children from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds used to motivate and engage students in writing. Note the types of approaches that teachers may use to promote their motivation to write. Also note how they have kids use their own background or personal life for writing. Note examples to support your points. Note whether/how language and culture is valued by the teachers as you see them working with students. After you have written most of this, again think about two concepts from this course that are related to this topic.

VIDEO 2 (28 minutes):

One page for each of the teachers’ classes observed. Each Teacher is worth 3 points for having the following information. (9 points total for this section).

NAME OF TEACHER 1 (3 points): Mark Hanson

Note what you perceive as being the classroom population.

Describe whether the classroom seems friendly, supportive and/or comfortable? What makes you think it is any/some/none of these? Explain how and why this is so.

What was the teacher trying to accomplish or teach? Explain. Provide examples of how teacher went about teaching?

Explain how the teacher coached or facilitated students learning that you found beneficial/valuable? (What were some of the strategies, approaches, methods, or ways of doing that you liked and maybe would employ? Or, similarly, explain what you found valuable (and, or not valuable) in the guiding and coaching of students.

Did the teacher provide any type of culturally responsive teaching? (If so, note it and explain and then you could refer to the Au article about it…BTW, you may put this information in another area where you answered the question.)

Did the teacher tap the students’ “funds of knowledge”? Provide one example (as this is also related to culturally responsive teaching).

Did the teacher provide any type of linguistic responsive teaching? (If so, note it and explain and then you could refer to the Au article about it…BTW, you may put this information in another area where you answered the question.)

Describe whether the children look engaged. Are children actively involved on learning tasks? Describe what this looks like or how they were involved.

What types of things did the teacher do to motivate, help, support them that seemed to make them engaged?

Did teacher use “think-pair-share” or similar strategy”? If yes, explain and provide examples. If not, explain and provide examples.
