Questions:

1. [Op-ed related question] For Sep 22’s class, two pieces of op-eds were assigned. One is “The Jacksonian Revolt,” written by Walter Mead and published in 2017. The other one is “Donald Trump Is Not a Twenty-First Century Andrew Jackson,” written by Mark Cheathem and published in 2017. Fully explain how the two authors disagree with each other in their reasonings (rather than in their positions). Please focus on their evidence and their interpretations of evidence.

2. [Primary Source related question] Based on the primary sources assigned in this course, compare Lincoln’s positions on all issues potentially related to slavery in 1858 and 1861. Please be as specific as possible.

3. [Op-ed related question] For Nov 29’s class, two pieces of commentaries on the 1619 Projects were assigned. One is “I Helped Fact-Check the 1619 Project…” by Leslie Harris in 2020. The other one is “The 1619 Project started as history…” by Carlos Lazada in 2021. Peruse the two pieces, and answer the following questions:

(i) How does each piece evaluate the project as a whole?

(ii) What mistakes or insufficiencies exist in the project, as each piece points out?

(iii) What’s at stake behind the debates around the 1619 Project, according to each author?

Please be minded to discuss the three sub-questions for each of the two pieces. In other words, this question includes 3*2 = 6 sub-parts in total.

4. Drawing on the textbook, lectures, and other assigned materials, discuss the formation and evolution of political parties in the history of the United States.

5. Every student has read Chapter Seven, “Of Ships and Shipwrecks,” of the textbook carefully. That chapter covers the interactions between the international and domestic dimensions of the Mexican War (1846–1848). In this question, you do not have to mention anything relating to the Mexican War or Chapter Seven of the textbook. However, please follow the lead of Chapter Seven and address the interactions between the international and domestic dimensions in each of the following wars:

(i) the Revolutionary War;

(ii) the War of 1812;

(iii) WWI; and

(iv) WWII.

6. Drawing on the textbook and assigned watching materials, discuss the impacts media had on democracy from 1787 to 1970.
