Week 2 Discussion- English Language Learners
English language learners are students who cannot communicate or learn English successfully. Usually, they require specialist or modified teaching, both in English and in their academic subjects (Park & Kim, 2017). There are three significant approaches that support teaching English language learners. The first strategy is teaching language skills across th, commonly originate from non-English speaking households and backgrounds, and e school curriculum. ELLs should not learn in isolation the basics of the language. They should use their language skills to generate rich academic material in all courses. For instance, when the teacher teaches mathematics, then they should teach the language of mathematics.
The second approach is speaking slowly while increasing the wait time. Teachers can record themselves while speaking in the classrooms to measure their cadence. Also, adding four seconds after asking learners a question gives the learners more time to understand and think. The third strategy is engaging learners with materials. Classes that involve speaking, writing, and drawing provide students with an opportunity to enhance their understanding. In my classroom, I would practice speaking giving learners time to think after posing a question.
Multiculturalism refers to the existence of difference and disproportionate dominance across populations regarding racial, ethnic, religious, regional and other cultural characteristics, which differ from dominant, sometimes racialized (Dubbeld et al., 2019). It is important to implement multiculturalism in early childhood education. This is because multicultural education offers lessons for cognitive and social development. Furthermore, multicultural education is the start of children's knowledge of variations in ethnicity, religion, and culture. This enables multicultural education to create a democratic education. In my classroom, I would develop multiculturalism by holding a food party in the classroom to celebrate different meals from around the world.
