Elijah Post 3-6 Writing Plan September 18, 2021 My argument for my persuasive essay is that legalizing marijuana federally is the most beneficial choice for improving the United States economy and population’s health. I believe that this will impact my career in the future. For example, it will by owning a business by saving money on drug testing and provide more financial stability to the economy to create more money for all. The three key points to my argument is that legalizing marijuana federally will create a stronger economy, offer many health benefits and remedies, and will regulate consumer safety for those who use marijuana. My target audience in this essay would be government officials such as state representatives and congressmen. I would also be addressing the public, specifically voters of the states. Some potential challenges could be trying to persuade those with a fixed mindset that marijuana is a drug and “all drugs are bad.” Also, trying to convince political parties to support this when they may have not supported it in past years. Politically it could make that individual fear losing his or her job from losing supporters. My main goal is to give the audience all the facts to provide an opportunity to have a fair and reasonable option to think of both sides of legalizing marijuana. Mainly the pros and cons and how this directly could benefit the reader specifically. This essay will need to continue to grab the reader’s attention with facts and a reason for the reader to stay engaged to be successful. Some potential resources are some academic journals and studies, polls from supporters and non-supporters, and news articles. These resources will be able to give specific data such as statistics and what the people in the communities think about this argument. More importantly it will tell why legalizing marijuana is a good or bad decision without opinions. To prove my points I can use information that I found after using Academic Search Ultimate. It brought me to an Academic journal that lists the pros and cons of legalizing marijuana federally that had a specific poll as to why people felt it was necessary to make this legal across the United States. An example of this is an essay study titled, Cannabis Legalization and Social Equity: Some Opportunities, Puzzles, and Trade-Offs. This study was written by Beau Kilmer, Jonathon Caulkins, Michelle Kilborn, Michael Priest, and Kristin Warren. This source is arguing that with legalization of cannabis, otherwise known as marijuana, could have a positive effect on “BIPOC” or Black, Indigenous, and People of Color through arrest disparities and how the potential benefits could positively affect the country as a whole. This study points out many facts on how marijuana is effective in states where it is legal such as health benefits which is one of my key points in my thesis statement. It also gives statistical data on the impact of that state’s economy which gives me proof to back up my arguments. Another resource is from an academic journal titled, Legalizing a Market for Cannabis for Pleasure: Colorado, Washington, Uruguay and Beyond, written by Robin Room from the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research. This source is perfect because it tackles the pros and cons of legalizing marijuana and using it in a free market system. This journal gives me proof on both sides of my argument and counter argument which is useful when looking at both sides of the equation on the people’s points of view. These articles above are just a few of the resources I found to provide evidence to my argument that directly correlate with my key points. It gives data and information that is factual and studied in areas where Marijuana is already legalized. I believe that this sources will add credibility to my argument. The points in my essay that I feel would be the best way to integrate my evidence is in the body of my paragraphs with each key point that the evidence supports. This I believe will give the best context to my audience on my standpoint for my argument and hopefully will persuade them to see my side better. The revision strategy I feel would be most effective for writing my essay is freewriting revisions. I feel like this gives me an opportunity to write new ideas after applying the feedback that I receive and change the areas that needed improvement throughout my essay. After completing the freewriting I can adjust and fix any grammatical errors or punctuation. The feedback I initially received from my instructor drastically changed how I approached the assignment in a positive way. I started out too personalized with my argument and was told to broaden my statements as it applies to a larger group. Each form of feedback helps me navigate this essay more efficiently and I feel it helps me target what the instructor is truly asking for. With each form of feedback the more helpful I feel it is. This feedback also helped me with my writing plan when it came to listing supporting resources and stating specific reasons as to why that resource applies to my argument and key points. 3-4 Annotating Your Sources All three of my sources were found in the Academic Search Ultimate database. The first source I found that I thought would be useful for my essay is titled Cannabis Legalization and Social Equity: Some Opportunities, Puzzles, and Trade-Offs. This source is using evidence from state documentation of arrests with specific demographics relating to “BIPOC”, surveys, and other secondary sources of literature from credible government agencies in the states where it is legal to use and own a cannabis business such as Colorado or Washington. One counter-argument that I found in this source is that the health impacts depend on the type and frequency of cannabis being used. There is a lot of unknowns because there just isn’t enough research to know how cannabis can affect someone’s long term health. The question is, is the United States willing to federally legalize marijuana without knowing the long term health effects on cannabis users without having any concrete evidence that it will be safe? Personally, I believe the source is doing a good job of supporting its arguments because it has many different sources, research, and statistical data to help support their claims. I think this source will help me in supporting my argument because it gives plenty of information to use to help persuade my audience to look at my point of view and help them decide whether they agree or disagree. The second source I found is titled, Legalizing a Market for Cannabis for Pleasure: Colorado, Washington, Uruguay and Beyond, written by Robin Room from the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research. This source is arguing how legalizing cannabis would work in a free market and what the benefits and issues are of legalizing cannabis and how it would affect the United States financially. This source also uses factual evidence from states and countries where marijuana is already legal and using their statistics of sales against what that could mean for the U.S. altogether. I believe the source is doing a good job of supporting its arguments because it is using both sides of the argument. Those who are for the argument and those who are against to give a better perspective. The relevance of this source to my argument is it coincides with my key point of how legalizing cannabis could affect the economy. It gives data on how much money is coming in from the legalized states and a perspective on how the sales are regulated. The third and last source of my argument is from an article from the Society for the Study of Addiction titled, Evaluating the Public Health Impacts of Legalizing Recreational Cannabis Use in the United State, by Wayne Hall and Michael Lynskey. It seems this source is arguing the health impacts of cannabis use and if the number of users will increase in the future. The authors are using information from drug policy literature to support their arguments and conduct a study to prove their argument. Personally, I believe the source is doing a good job of providing information to support their source because they are using actual research and facts to prove their argument. Numbers don’t lie and I believe that they make an argument more credible and believable as long as there is proof behind it. I think this source will be helpful in in supporting my argument because it gives me more information to use against any counter argument regarding my key point on health impacts of cannabis. This may help to persuade others that the benefits outweigh the cost.
