READ THIS SCENARIO CAREFULLY: (You work as a freelance document designer/writer). A friend who works for Mountainview Foods has brought you some informational material about a new service his employer is offering. It’s called “Personal Shopping Express,” and it’s intended for the store’s customers who need groceries in a hurry but are short on time or capability (e.g., elderly or disabled). It also will allow people who want to avoid crowds and possible COVID exposure the comfort of shopping from home. The service allows customers to call in their order and have it delivered to their home. It is a delivery service; not a pick-up service. It is only available via phone order at present as the store is small with only a basic webpage—online ordering is not an option. Your friend’s boss wants to develop an attractive flyer/brochure that can be mailed or handed out to prospective users of the new service. It’s important that the document you create communicate well to the intended audience. The document needs to fit on one 8 ½” x 11” sheet that’s (a) unfolded, (b) folded once in a tent format, or (c) folded twice as a 6-panel brochure. The document may be double-sided. Designing this document represents an excellent opportunity for you to garner some additional business with the store, because if you do a good job they may be willing to let you design (or redesign) other materials for them. You should devote most of your time to designing the appropriate visual elements, and making sure that verbal and visual strategies work together to respond to the document’s rhetorical situations. If you believe that the verbal elements need some editing, go ahead and revise them. However, be careful not to alter the meaning or remove information that’s important! The information itself may be arranged in any order that you believe will be most effective for the target readers. The manager has asked that you work with this text as you design the flyer/brochure. In an effort to broaden the convenient services we provide, Mountainview Foods is proud to announce the kick-off of our newest service, Personal Shopping Express. Here’s how it works: Perhaps you are in the midst of preparing a gourmet dinner for special friends and discover that you’re out of a crucial ingredient or two—what do you do?
