for people to get out of their ways and deviate from the social norms. however, the realization can make one bounce back and follow the societal norms as required.
A time when I violated a social norm is when I engaged in a physical fight with another person. I started the fight but ended up losing it as he proved to be more tactful. He thus left me sustaining injuries which acted as a source of sarcasm that people started to use on me. this form of informal suction turned to be shameful on me and hence making me change and avoid any physical confrontations to date. The informal suction made me change as I became the laughing stock in the society. people could mock me and make sarcastic comments about me which made me feel very ashamed.
this is a very good way of reinforcing social control in people as they will avoid any form of physical confrontations so as to avoid the shameful situations I found myself in.
Goal of this paper:
Provide evidence that you understand Symbolic Interaction (SI), SI theories of deviance, and how to critically consider and apply those theories in a real life example.
In the Chapter 6 Discussion Post assignment (which is the above assignment), you were asked to think about a time when you violated a social norm and were sanctioned. You were also asked if you were informally or formally sanctioned. And finally, you considered how the sanction or sanctions served as a form of social control to reinforce specific values of the larger social order.
Construct a paper of about 500 in which you revisit your original post and think about the social norm violation in terms of the Symbolic Interaction Theories of Deviance. Remember that from the Symbolic Interaction perspective, society is largely socially constructed, including the behaviors or conditions considered deviant. This is true for informal and formal deviance.
PROMPT: Analyze and discuss your norm violation in the context of Symbolic Interaction theory, particularly Labeling Theory. You may also consider theories from Cooley, Mead, Goffman, or the Thomas Theorem, if appropriate to your discussion. Describe the violation, sanctions, and describe whether you were labeled or stigmatized. If you don't believe that you were labeled or stigmatized, describe the potential for both from the perspective of the theory.
