In this essay, you will argue for (or against) the text’s placement in the American literature canon using the criteria that you feel is important to the subject. Your argument needs to be supported by evidence from the text. Below is a list of criteria that you can use in your analysis, but you can use different, self-selected criterial. A text in the American literature canon should reflect ? history – The text provides insight to certain historical events that are important to understanding the history of the United States. ? sociology – The text allows the reader to understand how certain groups interacted among each other, or what life was like for certain individuals ? diversity – The text contributes to the diversity of the course by allowing the voices of authors typically underrepresented groups (women, people of color, members of LGBTQ, people of differing abilities, etc.) to be heard. ? creativity – The authors presentation strategy is creative and/or unique. ? universality – The text provides one (or many) universal themes that can relate to a wide variety of readers. The argument is yours to make. You can use one supplemental resource, but your argument should be built on your personal criteria-based analysis. Remember, your essay layout and documentation style must follow the MLA format. Although you are not required to include a Works Cited page, you are required to include properly formatted parenthetical citations within the body of your essay. When uploading your essay to Blackboard, it is important to upload it as a Microsoft Word document.
