Impurities of sulfur in coal, natural gas and gasoline create environmental problems. Limestone is an abundant natural resource which contains CaCO3. Use these equations to discuss how the rain is becoming increasing acidified and suggest potential solutions to our acid rain problems.

N2(g) + O2(g) <====>2NO(g)

2NO(g) + O2(g) -------> 2NO2(g)

SO2(g) + H2O(g) ------> H2SO3(aq)

2NO2(g) + H2O(g)----->HNO3(aq) + HNO2(aq)

SO3(g) + H2O -------> H2SO4(aq)

S(s) + O2(g) -------> SO2(g)

2SO2(g) + O2(g) -------> 2SO3(g)

CaCO3(s) + SO2(g) -----> CaSO3(g) + CO2(g)

Answer explained below in simple words

Step-by-step explanation

Acid rain are caused when sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are emitted into atmosphere and transported by wind and air currents.The major sources of So2 and NOx in the atmosphere are :

  • Burning of fossil fuels to generate electricity
  • use of automobile and other heavy Equipment
  • Manufacturing of oil refinery and big major industries

When sulphur released from atmosphere comes in contact with oxygen it reacts to produces sulphur dioxide

S(s) + O2(g) -------> SO2(g)

This harmful sulphur dioxide again reacts with oxygen in atmosphere to produce a more harmful compound called sulphur trioxide

2SO2(g) + O2(g) -------> 2SO3(g)

while major part of so2 reacts with oxygen to produce sulphur trioxide some part reacts with water present around to produce sulfurous acid acc. to reaction:

SO2(g) + H2O(g) ------> H2SO3(aq)

sulphur trioxide reacts immediately with water to produce sulphuric acid which then comes down along with rain according as

SO3(g) + H2O -------> H2SO4(aq)

similarly when nitrogen and oxygen in atmosphere come in contact they produce Nitrous oxide

N2(g) + O2(g) <====>2NO(g)

the nitrous oxide reacts vigorously with oxygen to give Nitrogen di oxide as:

2NO(g) + O2(g) -------> 2NO2(g)

on reaction with water no2 produces nitric acid and nitrous acid which then comes down as rain

2NO2(g) + H2O(g)----->HNO3(aq) + HNO2(aq)

A great way to reduce acid rain considerably would be to use fossil fuels as less as possible .WE as a individual should focus more on renewable energy sources such as solar energy , wind energy .One of the major source of so2 generation is the automobiles ...use of electric vehicle in future and prioritizing public transport over owned transport could also lead to reduction in acid rains level
