Interpersonal Communication
Interpersonal communication refers to a means by which individuals whose lives mutually influence each other in special ways relative to social and cultural norms pass messages between themselves. The characteristics of this type of communication derived from this definition are the involvement of two or more persons who are mutual or interdependent and have developed a special kind of bond in the context of a more extensive societal and cultural base. The effects of interpersonal communication, even in the real world, are evident. It is one of the aspects of the evolution of humans as it meant more ability to adapt and survive. In the current world, people with better interpersonal communication skills have the advantage of adapting to stressful situations, adequate satisfaction in their relations to partners, and reduced mental health issues. The functional aspects of this type of communication include relationship maintenance, self-presentation, and instrumentalism. Individuals position themselves to be seeming in a certain system by interacting for self-presentation objectives such as seeming knowledgeable or very approachable. This form of communication also leads to developing the base for relationship cultures through various elements such as values, symbols, language, and rituals even at lower levels. Relationship cultures are developed based on the criteria of relationships through interactions with the larger society. In my personal life, the chapter reminded me of the kind of different contexts that exists whenever I communicate with different people. Another interpersonal communication exists between my friends, which is very different compared to communication with my parents. For my friends, I would talk to them more about jokes relating to matters such as relationships, which is very different from a topic I would have with my parents. Communication with my parents would involve deeper issues pertaining to other issues of my life. The reading regarding the cultural aspects of interpersonal communication was more intriguing, and I would like to delve more into it. I want to be addressed if there are other aspects apart from the two mentioned in the reading.
