Moral Consideration

The reason why Peter Singer believes that non-human animals should be given similar moral consideration to animals is that they are all living beings. Being so, the non-human animals feel pain like animals. In this regard, Peter Singer wants to justify that non-animals should not be subjected to suffering for the sake of human pleasure. Indeed, non-human animals have often been used for human pleasures like entertainment, research, and consumption.  I do not agree with Peter Singer on this. In my view, humans don’t have the same moral standing as non-human animals. Moral standing should be the sole factor to be considered when determining the moral consideration of non-human animals. Essentially, humans have a higher quality of life than animals. Their foresight and autonomy capabilities are far beyond that of animals. Humans make autonomous decisions that contribute to the overall good of the community. Moreover, humans participate in the moral activities of a community (Coeckelbergh & Gunkel, 2014). In this regard, humans don’t have equal moral standing with non-human animals. The problem with this view is that animals will be bound to loss or suffering. To this end, there will be high overconsumption of animals as food. Two, animals will be overused in animal testing (Framarin, 2014). The researchers will not even follow the ethical guidelines. In overall, humans will mistreat non-human animals just to maximize their pleasures.
