Walmart is the Biggest brick and mortar retailer (Starkey, 2018) and is the third largest e-commerce retailer (Grill-Goodman -, 2020) in the United States. Being such a large organization it is hard to imagine the amount of data that they (Walmart) are able to collect everyday. Taking into account all physical locations and website traffic Walmart produces around “2.5 Peta Bytes of unstructured data from 1 million customers per hour” (Shah, 2018). To handle all of this raw data Walmart deploys business intelligence hardware and analysts to filter and categorize what is useful to the organization.
The data that is collected from customers and visitors of the stores and websites and used in a myriad of ways. Walmart used business intelligence systems to identify the data that can be used to answer questions and problems that arise in the supply chain by providing the real time data needed to run simulations to know how much product will be needed and when it should be ordered. Perhaps even automating some or all of this process. It could also be used to predict when shipments should be shipped and arrive from warehouses to store. The VP of Global Data for @walmartlabs described some of the tools and reasoning behind them at the National Retail Federation's (NRF) 2016 Big Show conference in NYC as a “not-so-secret-sauce”(How Walmart makes data work for its customers). The sauce VP Kolhatkar was referring to was Walmart’s ability to identify and store the massive amounts of data securely in a Data Warehouse by Teradata warehouse or NoSQL and then be accessed by BI and analytic tools. They Walmart remained agile and used platforms that enabled personnel to analyze data and continue to use it as needed to assist the company to grow and remain competitive in in multiple markets (e-comerce and storefront).
I did fint it interesting that Walmart has grown to the no. 1 retailer in the US and is competitive globally but they have also continued to gro in the e-commerce side of the business as well. They currently hold the number three spot behind Amazon and ebay. Amazon holds 47%% of the market for e-comerce and ebay is at 6.1%%. Walmart has recently taken the three spot from Apple in 2018 4% and in 2019 increasing to 4.6% (eMarketer Editors , 2019). As Walmart enhances its online shopping experience, in-store pick-up, and online order delivery options it market share will continue to grow and they will gain more data that will need to be utilized in a BI and analytical capacity.
