Combined Bending and Twisting

5. A solid steel shaft has a diameter of 200mm. The shaft transmits 550kW at 300r/min. It is also subjected to a bending

moment of 10kNm and an end thrust of 400kN.

Find:

5.1 The applied torque

5.2 The applied shear stress

5.3 The applied bending stress

5.4 The stress due to the end thrust

Draw a stress element and matching Mohr's circle clearly showing

Both principle stresses and the maximum shear stress at:

5.5 the top of the shaft's cross section

5.6 the middle of the shaft's cross section

5.7 the bottom of the shaft's cross section

Calculate:

5.8 the equivalent bending moment

5.9 the maximum principle stress using the equivalent bending moment

5.10 the equivalent torque

5.11 the maximum shear stress using the equivalent torque

Please state the nature of the direct stresses you calculate.
