20 marks
The following assignment expects students to analyse sources for a formal written source interpretation. It should consist of four paragraphs and demonstrate your understanding of how each source links to liberalism. This includes a paragraph thoroughly explaining at least one relationship that exists among all three sources. Make sure you have reviewed the unit pages in the course, as well as read pages 204-212 in your textbook before completing this assignment.

From my point of view, we in the United States have gone overboard in respect to the extent of regulations and detailed control of labour standards, industry, and the like. It's bad for us...I am in favour of cutting taxes under any circumstances and for any excuse for any reason, whenever it's possible.

Source one is talking about introducing social security to the average American family. The source is also claiming the benefits social security can offer. The cartoon has targeted not just the average American family but also independent children and widows. This political cartoon takes place in 1935 during the great depression since the social security deal was established at the same time. This poster was created to promote and inform American citizens about social security and all its possible benefits. Source one promotes government intervention in society. The social security deal is a program that is funded by the government and taxpayer dollars. The source reflects a shift to a mixed economy because a mixed economy has government intervention. The government controls taxes, so, therefore, it is controlled by the government. The first source does support some principles of liberalism, but it also supports collectivism. The collective principles are economic equality and government intervention. The government is involved because social security is funded by the government and taxes. Economic equality is also supported because it ensures all citizens will be financially secure. A principle of liberalism that is supported in the source is individual rights and freedoms. The social security deal allows individuals to have a high quality of life.
The source is about there being too much government intervention in society and the economy.
The speaker wants to try and eliminate as much government intervention as possible. This quote was said by Milton Friedman who was an American economist during the 20th and 21st centuries. Friedman also believes that the American government has become too involved in the economy and in citizen's lives that it is starting to become harmful to its economy and people. The quote supports the idea of a free market economy and/or laissez-faire capitalism. The author of the excerpt believes there should be little to no government intervention in the economy. The economic ideology that is reflected in the source is capitalism. This is because, in a capitalist state, they favour economic freedom over government intervention. A few principles of liberalism that are supported in the source are economic freedom, competition, and self-interest. Economic freedom is reflected in the source since the speaker Friedman believes that the government should not intervene in the economy. Self-interest is supported in the source as well because Milton Friedman wants individuals to act on their own beliefs and interests to achieve the common good. Since the excerpt supports economic freedom, competition is also supported because economic freedom allows individuals to compete with each other to maintain the common good.
The third source is about the effects of the stock market crash of 1929. This cartoon proves that many individuals were hit with hardships after the crash of the stock market that also resulted in a great depression which lasted for a decade. The source character is a victim of bank failure. This cartoon's purpose is to show others the hardships felt during the Great Depression, and after the stock market crashed. It was also very unexpected and caught people off-guard. The cartoon is critiquing liberalism and is expressing the need for government regulation in businesses to help protect its consumers. Even though the individual saved money in case something like this were to happen, the bank failed and ended up losing all his savings. His savings were lost because his investments were not protected by government legislation. The source criticizes laissez-faire capitalism because the individual believes that there should have been government intervention to prevent the stock market from crashing. The source does support the liberal principle of economic freedom. A principle of collectivism is also supported which is government intervention. The source supports economic freedom because before the stock market crash and leading up to it, there was little government intervention in the economy so people were acting on their own self-interest not thinking anything bad would happen. Government intervention is also supported in the political cartoon because the individual who suffered from the crash believed that there should have been some sort of government interaction in the economy to help prevent the events that occurred.
Each source is reflecting part of history. Source 2 is from 2006, and sources 1 and 3 are from the 1930s. The main topic in the first source is social security that will benefit everyone. The main idea in the second source was that there was too much government intervention in the economy and that this should be changed so there is less government intervention in the economy where possible. The main idea in the third source is the unexpected crash of the stock market and how the American citizens were affected by it. Sources 1 and 3 support modern liberalism. Source 2 supports classical liberalism. Source 2 would not agree with sources 1 and 3. This is because sources 1 and 3 want government intervention in the economy while source 2 does not want government intervention in the economy. Sources one and two were similar because they are both about the same time period. All three sources are about government intervention. A comparison between the three sources would be that there was no government intervention in the economy when the stock market crashed. In the second source, there was too much government intervention in the economy to the point where individuals wanted more economic freedom. In the first source, there was also government intervention because the social security deal was funded by taxes, which were collected by the government. There is a similarity between sources 1 and 3 because they both have a modern liberalism ideological perspective. The similarity between source 1 and 3 would be that they both agree with each other. The two sources say government intervention in the economy. One relationship between all three sources is government intervention in the economy.
