Assessment Guidance for PART A:

1.            Clearly describe your chosen example of questionable ethical behaviour by a business organisation. Describe the behaviour clearly and identify why you think the behaviour can be considered ethically questionable: what is the actual problem in this behaviour? In previous semesters, weak essays have typically provided insufficient detail in describing their chosen issue.

2.            Clearly explain one of the three ethical standards discussed in class (i.e., either ethics-as-consequences, ethics-as-categorical-rules, or the Mauri Model). Before you can apply an ethical standard to your chosen example, you will need to clearly, fully, and accurately explain how your chosen ethical standard works: how does it distinguish between what is right and wrong? It is important here to refer to the additional information provided on the ethical standards under Week 2: Ethical Decision Making.

3.            Use that ethical standard to assess whether the behaviour described by your chosen news story is ethically acceptable or not. Your conclusions must be supported by clear and logical reasoning. Having explained how the ethical standard works, you will then clearly, fully, and accurately apply that ethical standard to the facts of the case. Use this analysis to determine whether the business behaviour that you have described is ethically acceptable or not. It is not enough to come to an ethical judgment that sounds sensible. You MUST also show how your judgment is the logical result of the application of your ethical standard. As a minimum, follow the process or use the questions from the relevant slides in the Week 2 Workshop slides.

4.            Explain what the business organisation would need to do differently to act ethically in this situation. Using the same ethical standard that you used in part (3), clearly, fully, and accurately explain what the business or the businessperson in your example would need to do to act ethically in this situation.

Academic integrity is closely monitored using a variety of methods. Any student who is found not to have completed the work themselves, through whatever means, will be disciplined and risks failing the course. STRUCTURE: We haven’t specified a structure that you have to follow. The structure of your essay should follow the various elements that you are required to address, in a way that fits within the word limit. Given that the word limit is 1000 words (+/- 10%) you might think of writing five paragraphs. One possible structure might be:

1.            Introduction: Explain what you are going to do in your essay, why it’s important, and how you’re going to go about it

2.            Describe your chosen example of ethically questionable behaviour in business. Make sure that you provide enough detail to show what the ethical issue is. Provide references to show where you got your information from.

3.            Explain the ethical standard that you are going to use (how does this ethical standard determine what is ethical?) and begin applying the ethical standard to your chosen example.

4.            Continue applying your chosen ethical standard to your chosen example. Finish with a definitive answer to the question (is the business behaviour that you are analysing ethically acceptable or not?) that is logically supported by your analysis.

5.            Draw on your application of your chosen ethical standard (from paragraph 4) to determine what the business actors in your example would need to do to act ethically in this situation. Given the short word limit, this can act as the conclusion to your essay.

Provide a full and accurately formatted (APA style) Reference List where you list all the resources that you drew on and quoted in your essay. The Reference List doesn’t count towards your word limit.

PART B: ACADEMIC INTEGRITY REFLECTION

PART B requires you to work through the first module of AUT's Academic Integrity Module (only complete Module One) and respond to the following questions (200 words +/- 10%):

1.            Choose one of the moral values listed at the top of page 3 of the module that you value as a person, and briefly explain why it is important to you.

2.            Briefly explain how the moral value you chose is also important in academic work.

3.            Briefly describe what would happen if this moral value were not respected when using the academic work of, or collaborating with, others?

NOTE: Make sure you reference the Academic Integrity Module where relevant.

Answer the questions to PART B as a separate section - if you cite the Academic Integrity Module, make sure you include this in your Reference List.
