Why has concern about the debt suddenly become such a major political issue?

Political issues are issues that make people to be divided on which action to be taken.

The national debt has suddenly become a significant political issue because the government debt is too high, and some politicians are proposing that the government has to reduce its spending to clear or reduce the debt. On the other side, others argue that the government should not reduce its expenses to pay the debt; it should use surplus production to settle the debt. Reducing national debt is vital for economic growth since a low debt ratio indicates a growing economy. Therefore, the national debt has become a significant political issue because some people are divided like republicans' support reducing government spending to reduce the debts. On the other side, the Democrats suggest using surplus production to settle the national debt.

The reason for the recent concern about the debt is two part: first, it's an election year. Election years are fraught with issues being brought up to divide voters and make them choose a side. Secondly, the debt has sky rocketed in the last few years. When the debt goes up, it becomes a hot button for reasons stated above.
