Topic: Climate Change’s Role in Accelerating the Threat of Water Scarcity Problem: What was the social problem that prompted you to search the literature to find out more? Write in complete sentences using a scholarly tone. The situation or issue that prompted me to search the literature is according to the World Health Organization, estimates by 2025 that half of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed areas (Damania, 2020). Although a shortage of clean drinking water is an immediate threat to global health equity, water scarcity can result in far-reaching consequences. Diminished flow in streams and rivers can increase harmful pollutants' concentration (Wang et al., 2017). As water resources run dry, animals may seek out drinking water from places people live, increasing the likelihood of contact between humans with wildlife and any disease-carrying insects they host. Rapid climate change will cause numerous droughts that will improve water risk and elevate the risk of wildfires and dust storms that will affect the quality of life of inhabitants of destress areas (Jones & van Vliet, 2018). Additionally, rainfall declines induced by climate change are expected to be compounded by water resource challenges and a rapidly growing population with a surging rate of refugee populations competing for water resources (Koubi, 2019). Based on all of the above information (literature, social problem), in one sentence, what is your research problem? The specific research problem that will be addressed through this study is it is not known whether there is a correlation between climate change and water scarcity. Secondary Quantitative Dataset The author can select any secondary quantitative dataset of their choice related to water scarcity. An example of secondary quantitative dataset is the CDC’s National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (NNDSS) but the author is no limited to this dataset. Quantitative & Qualitative Questions • What do you think are the root causes of water scarcity? • Which effect of water scarcity have you noted in your immediate environment? • What should be done to address water scarcity? The first quantitative question sought to understand the etiology of water scarcity. It correlated with the first qualitative questions that explored the respondents’ views on the etiology of water scarcity. The second quantitative question sought to present the effects and future ramifications of a prevalence of water scarcity. This correlated with the second qualitative question that explored the respondent’s experience with water scarcity and its impact on its community. Quantitative research focuses on understanding the future ramification of the phenomena. In contrast, qualitative research focuses on understanding the current observable effects of phenomena. The third quantitative and qualitative explore solutions to the public health concern. These questions supplement each other and provide a wealth of knowledge to the researcher to learn the micro and macro ramifications of water scarcity.
