The first assignment explores the different perspectives that may exist around sustainability issues and the importance of positive stakeholder dialogue to resolve potential conflicts in these perspectives. 

Students will be introduced to a sustainability issue requiring negotiation by a variety of different stakeholder groups industry and government Students will then choose which of these stakeholder groups to represent through the assessment.  

In the first part of the assignment (Part A), students will prepare a Position Statement on behalf of your first chosen stakeholder group. The position statement should contain:

•             an account of the sustainability issue;

•             a discussion of the sustainability dimensions of this issue; and 

•             your stakeholder group’s perspective on how the issue should be approached.

In the second part of the assignment (Part B), students will prepare a ‘negotiation strategy’ that your second chosen stakeholder group might employ to convince one of the other identified stakeholders of the merits of your position. This negotiating strategy should:

•             provide a high-level outline of the anticipated position of one of the other stakeholder groups;

•             identify where these positions would support or oppose the position of your designated stakeholder group; and

•             identify the strategies or arguments you might use to rebut or reinforce these positions.

Course Learning Outcome Assessed

 

1.            Critically evaluate the sustainability challenges facing business.

2.            Analyse the business and moral case for managing sustainability issues.

3.            Understand the potential and limitations of engaged stakeholder dialogue.

Part A of the assignment should be 750 words +/- 10%, and Part B should be 1250 words +/- 10%, excluding references.
