HW Assigment: Throughout your program you have explored a variety of methods through which health and human services have been delivered in communities. Either use the MHHS Case Study or a community organization of your choice and describe challenges that a health and human services professional would face. Explore how these challenges might impact decision making in the organization. Ensure you include a variety of perspectives (e.g., social, economic, psychological, political, etc.) Your initial post should contain a minimum of 400 words. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings. Your responses should be a minimum of 100 words each and should either elaborate on a key point a peer has made or seek to gain additional information. Classmate #1 Lecia Dickerson Organization: Amani Residential Human Services, Williamston, NC This organization offers services such as counseling (SAIOP and SACOT), operates a food bank for public use, and offers after school daycare for school age children. Amani Residential Human Services also runs a home for troubled teenage boys in the community. Challenges that face most nonprofit organizations today include aspects such as financial integrity, delivering quality service to the clients, protecting the health of the employees and clients alike, and maintaining adequately trained staff members to 2 provide quality services. Services may need to be offered either in-house or outside of the organization so transportation could also be a challenge for the clients. Also, Covid19 has drastically changed how healthcare is delivered in all types of organizations so staying up-to-date on all the health code requirements that have been put into place would be another challenge. One other challenge I would like to mention is the language barrier now within the US. Diversity in the US is what makes it a great country; however, it also has caused most organizations to hire bilingual employees to ensure adequate communication with all the clients using the services. Martin County is a small, rural community so it is smaller by population when considering the number of clients that may need these services. The economic impact on the business is that the lack of clients would cause a decrease in revenue, which is necessary for the business to maintain it’s day-to-day operations. Socially, the implications would include less clients in the business for adequate, positive interaction within group setting. Psychologically, the lack of HHS organizations could impact community members mentally because there would be nowhere to get these services. All these challenges would certainly affect decision making within HHS organizations. Decisions concerning finances within a small community would have to be addressed to ensure adequate financing for the business to operate. Decisions concerning which employees to hire is also something else to be addressed. Decisions concerning the social groups to be impacted with new programs need to be considered. Also, Covid-19 has caused many health rules and regulations to change, which is another area where new decisions have had to be made and new policies put into place. 3 Classmate #2 Lisa Swartz Hello Instructor Millard and classmates, Metropolitan Health and Human Services (MHHS) Case Study Describe challenges that a health and human services professional would face. There are a lot of challenges that a health and human services professional (HHSP) would face in this environment. Due to the many turn overs of leaders in this organization, this could leave the HHSP always wondering what the rules are because with each new leader the rules and/or guidelines in the workplace will change. This shows no consistency when working within a specific department. There seems to be a lot of separation within the organization when some of the departments could be working together and complimenting each other such as counseling, educational services, and violence prevention. If these departments worked together this may offer more support to each group and have the HHSP feel less overwhelmed when there is minimal staff in one place. The interns and volunteers of each area could also be helpful by taking some of the caseloads from counselors. Having minimal staff can leave HHSP feeling like they can not offer services at the best of their ability and with the compassion that each person deserves. When one department does well, they must share the profits with others that are failing, this could have the HHSP feeling bitter and possibly lead to not working as hard as they should and questioning their own ethics and beliefs due to added stress. Having staff that is not diverse adds challenges 4 for the HHSP. Everyone speaks English. They can’t be sure that information is be translated correctly and that the client and their families are receiving the appropriate resources that are available to them. Most of the upper management is male and that could lead to bad feelings among staff. Explore how these challenges might impact decision making in the organization. Ensure you include a variety of perspectives (e.g., social, economic, psychological, political, etc.) Many of the challenges in this case study will impact decision making in the organization. With so much turn over in upper management, it would be hard for staff to get to know and trust them. It could make it hard to exchange proper information such as staffing and financial needs to make changes. Psychologically there could be stress, anger, and feeling of lack of support that can cause bad decisions within the organization. Funds may be distributed unfairly when proper information is not shared due to lack of communication because most departments are functioning independently. All these things can cause the community and the people within them to suffer if the programs stop being offered or the HHSP are not providing the services as well as they can due to stress from the work environment.
