Prof. Dr. ?me Akanyeti Project Description • Group Work • Form a group of min 3 and max 4 students • Select an imaginery relevant project to your department • Examples: – Environmental Engineering • Wastewater treatment plant • Thermal treatment plant for hazardous waste – Energy Systems Engineering • Hydro Power Plant in Famagusta • Coal Combustion Plant – Civil Engineering • Highway Construction in Erzurum • Dam Construction 2 Project Description • A summary EIA report will be prepared by the group • The report must be minimum 8 and maximum 10 pages including only text. The tables, figures, maps should be presented in the appendix at the end of the report. • The report will include all the steps (specified in the next slide)of an EIA and a summary description or evaluation for each step. – – – – – • Text Font: Arial and Font size:11 Title Font: Arial Bold, Font Size: Max 12 Line space: Single Printed Double sided Page numbers will be included Presentation is NOT needed. 3 Submission • Soft copy of the report in Word will be submitted latest on 4 June 2021. • The reports submitted on time will be evaluated out of 100 %. • The mark of the late submitters will be reduced 10% for each day of delay. • Please do not copy and paste from other sources. The plagiarism should be less than 20%. Depending on the plagiarism level your mark will be reduced.100% plagiarism will get 0 from the Project evaluation. 4 EIA PROCESS STEPS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE REPORT • Screening (Make sure that you select a project that will need an EIA) • Preliminary Assessment – Scoping – Public Consultation • EIA Study – – – – – Identification Examination of alternatives Prediction Evaluation of Sginificance Mitigation 5 Screening • The purpose is to decide: – Weather the project requires an assessment or not – The level of the assessment • Certain types of projects are not likely to have serious adverse environmental consequences: Example: Planning and design of a villa • Other types of projects have the potential to cause significant impacts and routinely require a compherensive EIA 6 Screening • The types of projects which generally require an EIA include: – Projects which involve a significant change in renewable source use – Projects which involve a substantial change in farming or fisheries practice – Water sources projects, including dams, irrigation etc. – Infrastructure projects – Industrial projects – Extractive industries – Waste management and disposal – Etc. 7
