Do you think groups can be value-creating or highly frustrating depending on the processes within them.
Please explain using an example of a situation where a group lost value describing what happened?
What elements were missing or present that caused the issues?
What did you learn from it, and what would you share for future managers leading this team?
How does this situation compare to other groups you've been in that managed to create value?
Yes, groups and especially the operational groups can be productive in terms of value creation it there are better executive policies and procedures in place with clear and realistic strategic guidelines.
The processes and procedures in which teams operate in should also be favorable and conducive for the group members to unit and collaborate with each other for and unified operation. However, if the work conditions and terms demotivate or threaten the group existence and the team work, the group will turn out to be weird and its operations will frustrate both the management and the organization stakeholders.
Value creation will be facilitated through inclusivity and participatory group work, collaborative motion, common agenda, idea sharing and brainstorming, consultations and decision making, responsibility and authority, value and ethics, morality and dignity.
Step-by-step explanation
Lack of all these productive values and realistic operational policies and procedures, will turn all the group operations unproductive and it will frustrate the whole organization. for, instance, a year ago I was a member of certain group which was formed to initiate a break through innovative strategy on product development. The group members looked bored by the strategies we were using; some members spend a lot of time chatting while it is work time due to poor policies and procedures by the company we outsourced to help. The internal control system was very poor with unrealistic and questionable decisions.
The group lacked the order and command hierarchy and everyone thought that he should authorize and command any time he wishes to. The team had no team work programs and ideation programs for consultations and brainstorming; the communication channel was a big threat that leads to poor reporting and ineffectiveness within the operations. The strategic team had placed poor policies which did not match the strategic goal and the outsourced team had no expertise for the strategy.
Consequently, we ended up implementing a poor and incomplete strategy which did not survive in the improved global market competition. Despite consuming too much capital and finances on research and development, the product development innovative idea did not bring any value to the organization and the management was in a financial risk strategic planning.
From that scenario, I learnt that a group will always be productive and effective if the organizational policies and procedures by the management favor all the group operation and decisions by management support the group ideas and suggestions. It is good to acknowledge that good things cannot be achieved by a word of mouth but they require a consistence synergy between all the stakeholders.
For future managers, I would recommend that whenever you find yourself leading a group and especially an active operational team, try as much as possible to constraint all the groups' values, morals, professionalism, character, behavior and differences within a given set of standards and policies that are fair and equal to all.; Monitor the performance regularly and create a well-reliable reporting channel where groups can report freely and regularly on their performance. Create an inclusive management program where operation team can air out their views and ideas.
Comparing this group with other groups I have been in my past job market; I would say that this one did favor me as per my expectations and targets whenever I think of a group. The other groups which have worked with before have been so cooperative, unified and determined to do good and create value out of the scarce resources. We have collaborated and did marvelous with those previous groups and actually through the best policies and procedures displayed by the management, we have been able to achieve the set goal and achieve the strategic plan within the scope and the time frame.
