One of the most addictive substances in the current generation is, however, vaping, with most teenagers and kids falling prey to it daily. Many harmful effects come with the addiction, including lung inflammation and even death in extreme cases. Vaping is referred to as ecigarettes and was initially thought to be a safer substitute for cigarette addiction. However, ecigarettes have led to far worse effects than normal cigarettes despite people's expectations of them being safer. Nicotine addiction through vaping has had many teenagers falling into bad habits, and it's time for society to put their efforts together to end the vice. Introduction Nicotine is a very addictive substance and has been so for many decades. Ultimately, an average of 2.4 million teenagers all over the world was using e-cigarettes between 2011 and 2014. Approximately one out of four high schoolers had used vape within one month in 2014, while out of thirteen middle scholars, one of them had used vape within the same month. Nicotine has severe impacts on the body's metabolism, mood and impulse control, respiratory system and may impact asthma attacks. Furthermore, nicotine increases one's chances of getting cancer. When one takes substances with nicotine, brain development is affected. This is especially because one's brain does not fully develop until one is around twenty-five years of age. One major e-cigarette brand is JUUL (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). It is used by sucking into a small cartridge pod. There are two Juuls pods; the five percent one and the three percent one. Comparing the five percent one to normal cigarettes is quite shocking. One Juuls pod has the same nicotine component as the nicotine in twenty-six to forty tobacco cigarettes. A Juul pod can have almost double the concentration of nicotine in a vape cartridge. With that much nicotine in a single pod, addiction becomes very easy. 4 Since brain development does not occur until one is twenty-five years, the brain of such an undeveloped mind tends to be sensitive to rewards. The mesolimbic dopamine system is the reward system in the body (Nettleton et al., 2019). The brain tends to develop reinforcement in a positive way toward behaviors needed for a person to survive, such as drinking and eating. Since such a mechanism is ingrained in the brain, it becomes hard to resist. Substances such as alcohol and nicotine of addictive nature tend to get into the brains' reward system instead of the survival rewards getting there and thus habit in intake created. Typically, the brain is usually evolved in such a way so that it can interact with the body's neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine. With the acetylcholine in the body, the muscles in the body are activated. Dopamine is then sent by the receptors that bind with nicotine to give a good feeling to the body. This release of dopamine makes one do it over and over again and hence the addiction (Office of the Surgeon General, 2018). Literature review Many harmful chemicals have been discovered to be contained in the vapes. The Vitamin E acetate in some vapes was found to contain higher levels of cannabis that made many people ill. Many skin products are manufactured using Vitamin E acetate, but when the chemical is inhaled, it causes many dangerous effects to the body, especially the lungs (Cereus, 2019). Vitamin E is honey lie sticky substance that, when inhaled, interferes with normal lung functioning. Many of the vaping-related diseases are linked to Vitamin E acetate (Cereus, 2019). One other harmful chemical that exists in the vape is aerosol. According to studies, when the aerosol is found in vaping devices, it leads to volatile organic compounds which have a link to cancer. As a result of the many harmful chemicals contained in the vape juice, many deaths have occurred and even lung damage. Approximately six deaths were reported due to a severe case of 5 lung disease (Lai et al., 2020). More than the four hundred and fifty cases reported in thirty-four states were as a result of vaping. The fats and the oils in the vape substances have high chances of causing lung inflammation and causing a severe case of noninfectious pneumonia (Lai et al., 2020). In North Carolina, five people were reported to have developed this noninfectious pneumonia. Also, fisty three lung disease cases were reported in North Carolina, where most were hospitalized, with a third of them requiring a ventilator to be able to breathe (Office of the Surgeon General, 2018). Implication Contribution to existing knowledge Vaping was introduced into the market as a way to reduce nicotine addiction from cigarettes. However, vaping itself has caused more addiction, especially to the younger generations. If nicotine addiction continues, especially in the younger generation, it will contribute to a generation of undeveloped minds in the future. For the vice to be put to an end once and for all, major changes need to be made in the vape industry. Juul's production takes up almost forty percent of the market, having a gross profit of about one hundred and fifty million dollars in retail sales within only a quarter year (Truth Initiative, Vaporized: Youth and Young Adult Exposure to E-Cigarette Marketing, 2015). Confirming or developing a theory Vaping is used more than traditional external cigarettes. Most of the users of the vape are, unfortunately, teenagers and younger people due to the way the vape is packaged, marketed on social media, and the fruity smell it has. It makes it hard for a young person to think that such a harmless fruity-smelling device could be dangerous in any way. For that reason, more and more teens continue to use the vape for no particular reason that to feel good and also be like the rest 6 of the people using the vape. In the end, they get addicted, and continual use of the vape bring about severe consequences. Challenging a current assumption Most people prefer vapes to e-cigarettes since they appear as a USB drive and not an ecigarette (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). To health solve this problem, the producers and marketers need to find a way to style the device in ways that don't attract teenagers as much as it does now. The whole social media explosion on how trendy vape needs to die down. Also, the fruity flavors and the sweet smell need to be taken away, as that is what makes the product most appealing to the kids. Society should teach the kids of the harm that can come with nicotine intake and addiction, especially to their brain development and to their health in general. Creating the basis for further research Despite warnings on e-cigarettes being warranted given the popularity and growth in their use, and the interest in their safety and risk, the fact remains that the use of e-cigarettes is less harmful than tobacco cigarettes to an individual. However, when it comes to kids, the use of any drug should not be allowed, even nicotine, due to the long-lasting effects that come with nicotine addictions. This study builds on previous research, but more should be done to avoid the vice among kids. Further researchers should put their efforts into discouraging the use of vape among non/never smokers and showing them the risks that come with vapes and e-cigarettes. Simultaneously, the measure should not discourage the use of vapes among former smokers or current smokers. Research on how to communicate the risks of vapes and e-cigarettes is paramount to a healthy future (Advancing Science & Policy in the Retail Environment (ASPiRE) Center, 2020). 7 Reference Advancing Science & Policy in the Retail Environment (ASPiRE) Center, Tobacco Density & Access, August 2020, http://aspirecenter.org/wpcontent/uploads/2020/08/ASPiRE_RetailTobaccoDensityandAccess_ExecSumm.pdf.
