According to Goleman (1995), emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize your own emotions, the emotions of others, and how they influence our lives (either positively or negatively). We have all experienced difficult situations where emotions run high and our ability to regulate our emotional intelligence is tested. Use this discussion as an opportunity to apply the knowledge you’ve gained this week about emotional intelligence to a real-world scenario.

Read the scenario below and use the strategies discussed in Interactive 2A and the Week 2 reading on emotional intelligence  to answer the Step 2 prompts.

Dana is a single mother of two children, a full-time student, and has a full-time job. As you can imagine, her ‘plate is full’, and she feels stressed out with all her responsibilities. Dana's boss, Carlos, pulled her aside after a team meeting expressing concerns over her behavior at work. Carlos said that Dana has been rude to her co-workers during team projects, argues with him in department meetings about team projects, and does not use a professional tone when sending emails.

2. Initial Post: Create a new thread and answer all three parts of the initial prompt below

  1. Describe one (1) way Dana's behavior could affect her co-workers or boss.
  2. Imagine Dana came to you for advice about her conversation with Carlos. Provide Dana with one (1) self-awareness or one (1) self-management tip that can help improve her behavior at work.
  3. Provide Dana with one (1) social awareness or relationship management tip that can help improve her behavior at work.
