Each discussion is meant to be a collaborative space for conversation about the course concepts and for learning from your peers' diverse perspectives. For your initial post, address the following:

1. Introduce yourself to the class.
   1. What degree are you pursuing and why?
   2. Where do you live?
   3. How would you describe your identity? In other words, what makes you, you?
2. Discuss the value of studying the social sciences for everyone, not just social scientists. Why might it be important for individuals and society to understand how the social sciences relate to current events and contemporary issues?
3. Consider a recent event, either in your personal life or in the news. In a few sentences, describe how basic knowledge of the social sciences could help you better understand that event, make decisions, or act.

For your response posts, address the following:

1. Pick two peers who chose current events or personal experiences different from yours. Offer your own ideas about how having knowledge of the social sciences might affect how your peers understand the events they identified.

Remember, this assignment is graded on the quality of your initial post and at least two response posts to your classmates. You are not required to do research for this discussion.
