Is conformity more likely or less likely to occur when interacting with other people through social media as compared to face-to-face encounters?
How can people learn to get along with people who seem different from them?
The section “Persuasion: So Easily Fooled” is enlightening in explaining the different forms of persuasion that exist daily. Most times, these persuasion techniques are primarily applicable in the advertisement and marketing sectors (Levine, 2021). I am most prone to marketing persuasion, where I fall prey to advertising brands. For instance, with skincare, marketing is persuasive, and the products may be costly. However, more people keep buying the same products despite their prices as the marketing techniques convince them. The best way to avoid this is by using actual results and not celebrity influence. However, this may be hard to implement as it would imply that some businesses fail.
Conformity is more likely to occur when interacting with other people through social media compared to face-to-face encounters. Because social media has a particular type of pressure, some individuals feel the need to adhere to fit in and gain social recognition. Social relationships are a huge part of every individual (Burger, 2021). Therefore, young people especially try to emulate the people they admire on social media to achieve recognition. Face-to-face has the same effect, but it may have less pressure as it may involve a small circle. On the other hand, social media involves a larger group of people, thus may create more judgment.
People can learn to get along with different people by embracing their differences, self-discovery, and appreciating other people. In return, this will bring about more acceptance and also promote diversity. They are embracing practices that encourage non-conformity to include intermarrying, exchange programs, and travelling. These aspects promote exposure to different races, ethnicities, groups, ages, and people of varying opinions. They also encourage a supportive environment (Biswas, 2021). As such, it creates a more open-minded environment where people learn to live with each other peacefully irrespective of their differences.
