Instructions:
Write a letter for a charity of your choice to local business owners asking for donations to the
charity. You might choose the local-area United Way campaign, for example, or the London
Food Bank. Your purpose for writing is to persuade local business owners to give to the charity
you are representing and ‘speaking for.’ You may ‘speak for’ the charity in one of two ways: you
can assume an imagined identity as someone working directly for the charity in question, or you
can assume that you are a ‘volunteer’ canvassing on behalf of the charity in question.
Your letter must include a visual component (image, chart, graph etc.), and should put into
practice everything that you have learned about writing effective persuasive letters.
Visual components are images, charts, graphs, and tables. For the purposes of this assignment,
pull quotes and headings do not count as visual elements. You must use one visual element, but
you can you use more if you choose, and you are encouraged to use everything you have learned
about document design to make your letter as persuasive as possible.
In order to complete this assignment, you may need to research the charity you have chosen. If
you use information or visuals from this charity’s promotional materials, or from other
sources, you need to acknowledge those sources in a bibliography that is attached to the
letter. You may use whatever format you wish (APA, MLA etc.) for the bibliography.
