Thesis Summary and Original Argument - Philosophy

For this assignment, you must:

•             Summarize the overall thesis, as well as a particular argument from the reading "Excellent Online Friendships: An Aristotelian Defence of Social Media" by Alexis Elder.

•             You must also provide your own original argument for or against, Elder's conclusion.

•             Accurately state Elder's thesis as to the possibility of forming real friendships through social media.

•             Describe, in your own words, the argument(s) that she gives to support this conclusion in the section: Poverty of Communication Objection.

•             Clearly describe how the argument in this section is connected to Elder's thesis.

•             Construct an original argument of your own, for or against Elder's thesis.

Notes: Many students new to writing philosophy papers mistake an example for an argument. An example supports an argument that has already been made, whereas an original argument gives a new reason for the same conclusion.

Elder considers the views of other philosophers in the paper and goes on to show how these views are incorrect or insufficient. Be careful not to confuse the presentation of these views with the author's own view in this paper.
