Please paraphrase In "Lincolnites," the story takes place during the Civil War. Lily is introduced as an innocent woman who loves to knit (Rash 193). She has a one-year-old child in her care while her husband is away fighting on the Union side of the war. She finds out that while her husband visited her, she became pregnant (Rash 194). So now, not only must she fend for herself but her baby and unborn child. Trouble comes and Lily shows how brave she is in the face of danger. "The Confederate grinned as he stepped into the yard" (Rash 196). Lily had to quickly formulate a plan to ensure her family's safety. She did not rely on anyone else but herself. She used her own body to find his weakness. She tapped in and found courage to discretely stand up to the Confederate soldier. "Lily watched as Vaughn silently mulled over his choices, including the choice he'd surely come to by now that he could just as easily have her and the horse both" (Rash 199). He agreed to Lily's offer and followed her to the root cellar. Vaughn thought he would get lucky and have both her and maybe the horse, but Lily struck. She pierced him with her knitting needles and left him to die. Although she was alone, she did not let this discourage her. However, she did use it as a driving force to act for her family. In her time of difficulty and loneliness, she successfully reached in to find her strength and courage. Thinking of how she needed to protect her family, she used her resources to take advantage of the soldier who thought he had the upper hand. She had let him believe he was in control up until the last second. This allowed for her to attack swiftly and effortlessly as he was clueless. Using his pathetic and sickening manly wants, Lily effectively made sure her family stayed safe for at least one more day. Lily's newfound confidence gave her the strength which allowed her to hold on to humanity, not only for herself but for her children as well. This allowed her to live a little longer with her livestock and kids. Her strengths gave her the opportunity to remain in touch with her humanity.
