In Betty Rolin's Motherhood Who Needs It, we are forced to look at the other side of the abortion coin--motherhood. We are told that "...unhappy mothers are often loath to admit it. For one thing, if in society's view not to be a mother is to be a freak, [and] not to be a blissful mother is to be a witch. The realities of motherhood can turn women into terrible people. And, judging from the 50,000 cases of child abuse in the U.S. each year, some are worse than terrible" (739). How do you feel about all of that? If a woman is unhappy as a mother, is she not likely to admit it because of the backlash she can receive, and does that unhappiness go hand in hand with turning her into a terrible person?
