All files: Project 1 Scanned FilesLinks to an external site.

*Note the heel file is quite large. I recommend using a decent desktop to process it and reduce the triangle count before repairs, or to hand select meshes from the raw data and reconstruct a smaller file manually.

You may propose your own component/object but must get approved by your instructor in writing prior to the start of Week 4.

  1. Recreate the component/object as a 3D design by fixing the mesh issues (or scanning your own object and fixing the mesh). (5pts)
  2. Generating an editable CAD model. Redesign the component/object for additive manufacturing. Select an appropriate additive manufacturing process, design the new version using the unique strengths of the selected additive manufacturing process. Fabricate the DfAM design and the intermediate original design. Bring both fabricated designs and the original object to tutorial and present your work. (10 pts)

Submit the following to this submission portal:

  1. A description of your DfAM selections and rationale (<500 words) with images of your original, repaired, printing, and redesigned object (10pts)
  2. Design files (5pts)
    1. Original scan file (.stl, or .ply)
    2. Repaired (.stl, or .ply)
    3. Redesigned CAD model in an neutral format (.step) and the native file type of the CAD package you used (e.g. .ipt, .sldprt)
    4. gcode/printing file (.gcode)
