 Examining Your Goals

Complete the following questions based on your athletic experience, exercise interests, or professional career goals (e.g., to become a physical therapist).

Adapted from T. Orlick, Psyching for Sport (Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics, 1986), 14-16.

  1. Dream goal (long-term): What is your long-term dream goal? To be a professor in the field of physical education.

What is possible in the long term if you stretch all your limits?

  1. Dream goal (this year): What is your dream goal for this year? What is possible if you stretch all your limits this year?

  1. Realistic performance goal (this year): What is a realistic performance goal that you can achieve this year, based on your present skill level, your potential for improvement, and your current motivation?

  1. Monthly goal: Set a personal goal that you feel you can achieve within the next month. Name one goal you would like to focus on with special intensity.

  1. Next class or practice goal: Set a personal goal that you feel you can achieve by the end of your next class or practice. Name one goal you would like to focus on with special intensity.

Activity 16.2 Prioritizing Your Subjective Goals

  • Identify six of your most important general subjective goals, and enter them in the Subjective goals column.
  • Then reflect on the goals and prioritize them, placing an X in column A (being most important), column B (being somewhat important), and column C (being less important). All of your goals should not have the same priority (so use at least one B and one C).
