Answer the following question about Policy solutions to advance racial equity in housing.

You have been working on a problem or issue of your choosing all semester. Now, you'll need to develop a plan to make your policy solution a reality. This means students will figure out which levers to pull and how to pull them. Students will identify steps that would need to be taken to introduce their policy to the appropriate policymakers, who those policymakers are, and craft a message that should resonate with those policymakers. Students will deliver three products as a result of this assignment:

  1. The Research (one to three pages, at least three sources): This is where students identify the steps, the policymakers, the perspectives, and the arguments those policymakers need to hear.
    1. What level of government are you focusing on?
    2. Who are the relevant policymakers you'll be addressing? Why?
    3. What are the perspectives of those policymakers? What do they care about? What do they think about your issue?
    4. What argument do you think will be most effective in convincing them of your solution?
  2. The Communication: Students will draft a letter to the identified policymaker(s) proposing and justifying their solution based on their research.
    • The letter should be two to three pages and include proper salutations and signatures.
    • The letter should have an appropriate tone.
    • Introduce your policy and point them toward resources where they can read about it.
    • Make a strong case for why they should advance your policy solution.
  3. The Advocacy Plan (one to three pages, at least two sources): Policymakers don't always respond in the ways we hope they will. Students will describe the next steps in an advocacy campaign to build public support for their policy solution.
    1. What stakeholders would you want to engage?
    2. Are there organizations that make sense to partner with or join?
    3. What would your public-facing message be if you want to build support?
    4. What argument would you use to convince those on the fence?
