Testing

Hickory Middle School has a gifted education program called Soar that is touted as one of the best in the state. The school has established clear criteria for inclusion in the Soar program. Among the criteria is a score of at least 130 on a standard intelligence test. Crystal is a student just entering 6th grade and hoping to enter Soar. Crystal took the requisite test twice in two months, and there was an unusual 100-point difference between her scores. Crystal also complained to her parents that many of the items on the tests had gender stereotypes, and she was offended by the test. She and her parents meet with the placement counselor, Mr. Babbit, to discuss her placement. Her parents discussed the issues with the test with the counselor, but Crystal was not allowed into the program because her highest score on the test was two points shy of the cut-off. Additionally, Crystal is having issues with exams in her 6th-grade class. The exams are all multiple-choice items, but they are often confusing, extremely long, and with choices that are usually very similar and indistinguishable.
