a dictionary as needed. This will simulate a situation in which you may find yourself in looking
for the law. For the most part, we have not covered the area of law that each case discusses, but
the judge(s) do a good job explaining the law and their reasoning.
Format
I. Facts
-tell the facts, the story of the case, that are pertinent to the court’s ruling
-do not simply repeat/quote the facts the court gives you, do so in your own words
-do not include facts that are irrelevant to the court’s ruling
II. Holding
-what did the court hold?
-this is short – a sentence or two giving the decision or holding
III. Reasoning
-what is the standard of review
-why did the court rule this way
-explain in detail how the court came up with the holding, including any cases/statutes
IV. Analysis
-provide a public policy analysis
-use 1 source to support this section, it can be from the case
-use 1 external source to support your policy analysis
-please state an opinion and support it; don’t make your reader guess
