This week's learning activity is a short case called "Fund Raising Project", available starting from page 62 (Chapter 2) in your textbook (Project Management The Managerial Process 7th Edition). You are required to do the following:

1. Rank the fundraising activity proposals. Basically recreate the project priority evaluation form, complete it, and then rank the projects from 1-6 with 1 being the best, most desirable project and 6 being the least desirable. Provide a brief justification for the assigned scores given to each project based on the "want" and "must" factors under consideration. Remember to be attentive to the weighting of various "must" and "want" objectives.

2. Based on the specific project that you selected, meaning the one you ranked number 1, stakeholder power/interest grid. (Include the actual grid in your assignment.) Are they any stakeholders that you are especially concerned about and how can you best go about identifying and addressing any concerns they may have? What currencies are relevant when trying to influence those particular stakeholders (see chapter 10 from module 1)?

3. What strategic risks do you perceive? Are there aspects of the organizational culture on campus that increase or decreased project risk (see chapter 3)? If so, what are they and how might they influence the project? Remember when answering this question that the setting is the University of Winnipeg, which places all activities under a broad level of community scrutiny with high expectations for social responsibility and inclusiveness.

4. Now imagine that you are being given the same list of proposed activities but your goals have changed. You are no longer interested in just letting people practice their skills. Now your primary goal is to identify the best project team in order to hire them on a permanent basis. (Assume that you are hiring the teams as-is, not selecting individual members.) You are also no longer concerned with profits in a single night, now you are concerned with creating a fundraising event that can be easily replicated in other communities with associated materials and processes sold for a small fee as a "turnkey" fundraising solution.

  • How do the new goals change your "must" and "want" objectives and the associated weighting? Explain your reasoning.
  • How did your rankings change as a result of the new priorities?
