(1) Metabolic fitness is a positive state of the physiological systems commonly associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Metabolic fitness is manifested by healthy lipid profiles, healthy blood pressure, healthy blood sugar and insulin levels, and other non-performance measures.
(2) Two measurements of metabolic fitness includes measuring the estimated number of calories burned when at rest (Resting metabolic rate or RMR) and Maximum volume of oxygen (V02 Max), which refers to the body's maximum ability to utilize oxygen during exercise.
(3) Ways to improve metabolic fitness includes:
- Exercise: The more energetic the activity, the higher the metabolic rate and caloric burn will be. In addition, exercising gives the body's metabolism a boost. High-intensity exercise delivers a bigger, longer rise in resting metabolic rate.
- Eating a well-balanced diet. For example, increased intake of high-quality protein increases metabolic rate. Eating the right food increases metabolism.
- Increasing fluid intake. If the body lacks fluid, the body's metabolism tends to slow down. Hydration stimulates metabolism and the it increases the process by which the body converts food and water intake into energy needed by the body.
(4) Four physical benefits a person can obtain by increasing their physical activity.
- Strengthens heart and improves circulation. Thus, reducing risk of cardiovascular related diseases such as coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension.
- Strengthen bones and muscles. Thus, lowering risk of osteoporosis.
- Helps manage blood sugar levels. For example, when you engage in physical activity, the muscle utilizes more glucose, thus lowering blood sugar levels.
- Boost body's energy. Regular physical activity enhances muscle strength and endurance. Since physical activity improves blood flow or circulation, it delivers more oxygen and nutrients to tissues throughout the body and helps the cardiovascular system to work more efficiently.
(5) Mental benefit from physical activity.
- Reduces depression and anxiety. Physical activity stimulates feel-good endorphins and other natural brain chemicals that can enhance sense of well-being.
- Decreases stress. Physical activity causes the body to produce chemicals known as endorphin that triggers positive feeling—it also helps promote better sleep quality, which in turn reduces stress.
