Native Americans

The Native Americans were initially the settlers of America before the English men took their land. As a minority group whose culture, traditions, beliefs and religion was different from the white man, they were considered less intelligent in any political, social or economic affairs. Above all their skin was dark and for this reason many were tortured and killed (Nielsen, 2019).

The white men first used the assimilation method and making the red Indians forget all about their new culture. The civilization wave forced the natives out of their lands and many of them were killed resisting. As a result, war between the Native Americans and the federal government emerged into which the government came up with the termination policy. This hereby meant that the Native Americans were no longer slaves to the white men and that they would soon have their lands back.

The policy was first alarming as the natives had interpreted it as being chased or rather wiped out. While the policy seemed promising, it turned out to be a way of obtaining more valuable land from the Indians. The status of the Native Americans is still questioned even today as the government has never resolved to put that into consideration in the making of policies and laws.
