Client Fact Situation for Client Care Assignment - Bridget Grant

You will be playing the role of the client, Bridget Grant. She is a citizen of the United States, and she is also a Canadian permanent resident. She would like to apply for Canadian citizenship through the naturalization process. In the last four years Bridget has been in and out of Canada on business matters. Almost half of the trips and days away have been back to the United States and the remaining time has been trips to a variety of countries, mostly Asia and Europe, on business and vacation.

Bridget spent two years in Canada on a work permit as an Intra Company Transferee before becoming a permanent resident. Since then in the last three years she has been in Canada for a total of 30 months (912 days). She continues to work with the same Canadian subsidiary of Global Protection Corp. of Seattle. The Canadian subsidiary is in Calgary, Alberta. Set out in the chart below are the details of the trips outside of Canada in the past three years. She did not leave Canada during her two-year work permit period.

Year  Dates  Destination  Reason for Absence  Total Days

-3  July 1 to 15  California  Vacation - Wine/bicycle tour   14

-3  Sept 5 to Oct 3  Seattle  Business - Training on new products/Services  28

-3  Nov 25 to Dec 23  Seattle  Business - Product Development Sessions  28

-2  April 1 to 14  Bali  Vacation - Honeymoon  14

-2  July 8 to Aug 19  Shanghai  Business - Foreign Acquisition Exploration  42

-1  August 3 to 31  France  Business - Intra-corporate Transferee  28

-1  Nov 6 to 24  Seattle  Family - Parents funeral/estate affairs  18

You can see that Bridget was in Canada for most of the required period until the last absence before the application. Bridget married a Canadian-born citizen who has extensive family in Alberta and B.C. Her job is in Calgary, but she is required to take trips back to the parent company office in the U.S. and around the work on the company's business. On the side Bridget has set up her own company marketing outdoor gear to people who enjoy outdoor winter and summer sports and leisure activities like hiking and skiing. Bridget pays taxes in Canada and belongs to community organizations such as civilian emergency preparedness and wilderness rescue services.

This is the outline of the case. You will be interviewed as Bridget by your assignment partner for these facts and further details, and then working together on her file for an application for citizenship for her. This work will be interwoven with the course days where you will receive more direction and instruction from your instructor and your student materials. Please stay in role for the interview.
