The United States government can be classified using four different criteria. Using these criteria, list the four types of government that the United States has.

Who has power: Democracy. The citizenry in the United states elect the representatives and the electors for the electoral college who in turn, vote to elect the president.

How much power the government has: Limited Government. The government is constitutionally restricted. For instance, the 10th amendment states that the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. The government can therefore not exercise powers it has not been given by the constitution.

Where the government's power is located: Federal Government. Power in the United states is shared by a Central government with the states which have their own state legislatures. Such power dynamic is indicative of a federal government.

How power is distributed between the legislative and executive branches: Presidential Government. In a presidential Government, the executive branch is headed by a president who is the head of state. The legislative branch is separate. The legislature makes laws while the executive branch enforces these laws.
