The Gagax (Rodensis yorkii) is a very rare species of mammal that is threatened with extinction. It occurs in a handful of small local populations and one somewhat larger population. The populations are distant from each other, spread out across a large geographic area with some habitat variability. Gagax produce a lot of young, but the young Gagax have a high rate of mortality in the wild. Therefore, a decision is made to take a small number of individuals from the largest existing population and breed them over several generations in captivity and raise the young until they are old enough to be released. The goal is then to keep a few of the young in each generation for breeding purposes and release the remainder across all the different populations to increase the size of these populations.
