Dispersion is a transformation that occurs in substances. More specifically, dispersion occurs when small particles of one substance are scattered throughout another substance. A dispersion is classified as either a suspension, colloid, or solution. A suspension is when one finely divided substance is scattered throughout another substance. An example of a suspension is small droplets of oil scattered in the air. A colloid is when a substance is divided into minute particles and is scattered throughout another substance. An example of a colloid is smoke. A solution is homogeneous mixture of at least two substances. An example of a solution is household ammonia, which is water and ammonia gas.
