A sample of 3,014 steelworkers was selected to find out if they will go on strike on Monday. Over 50% (actually 53.2%), of those in the sample said they would go out on strike. Since the number sampled is large and those advocating a strike constitute over 50%, can we assume that the majority of all steelworkers favor a strike? (assume the sample is large enough and random and representative)
Samples are selected randomly to represent the population approximately. It means the higher and the random the sample is, the better it will represent the population. If we have a large sample that is selected, from the targetted population, randomly then we can say that the result of the sample is reliable.
Therefore:
We can assume that the majority of all steelworkers favor a strike because we have a large sample and those advocating a strike, in the sample, constitutes over 50%.
