Working as a respiratory therapist (polysomnographic technologist (sleep studies)) is just like any other job has it own advantages and disadvantages. The reason why I would choose sleep studies career is because I would change people's lives without the use of medication. There are so many patients struggle day-to-day with staying awake, have sleeping conditions that is affecting the lives of their partners. This career can improve the quality of not just a person's life but potentially that of their whole family. If a person is snoring loud, it not only affecting their sleep, but it also affected the sleep of their bed partner. You can also observe other sleep conditions during the studies. Helping someone sleep better is one of the aspects that like about the job, I like to work directly with patients, and another reason why I would be interested in working in this career is because of the pay. Sleep studies pay good. However, every job has it own disadvantages. The reasons why I would not be interested in working in this career is because you must stay up all night to ensure that you get the most accurate analysis by depriving yourselves from sleep just to make sure your patient's get a better night's sleep. Some patients are very rude when they come to the sleep lab, they may insist to go to bed early and some may want to stay in bed until noon in the lab. Most patient are uncomfortable because recording is performed in an unfamiliar environment. Morning breath is the worst for me, especially going into the room in the morning to wake the patients up and take off the CPAP mask. There is no variety of shifts and it may not be suitable for individuals who are not used to night shift. Sleep studies is not for everybody.
