Pan challenged the god of music to a competition and blew a rustic melody on his pipes that delighted King Midas.
Apollo and Pan had musical contest that was to be judged by the mountain God Tmolus, who picked Apollo as the winner. King Midas who was also present at the contest, disagreed. Believing Pan to be the better musician. Apollo punished Midas by turning his ears into an donkey's ear, a sign of foolishness.
