  1. What is a natural hazard? Natural hazards are events produced by natural processes occurring on earth such as earthquakes, landslides, and tsunamis.

a. Earthquakes are one of the natural hazards difficult to mitigate. Mostly we rely on early warning systems in order to predict earthquakes. In order to reduce the loss of life or loss of property in areas where earthquake mostly occurs, prediction technologies should be improved. Most hazards caused by earthquakes are due to poor structural design of buildings. An input of a geologist is needed in structural design for buildings to know how earthquakes will affect the building.

b. Tsunamis are also difficult to predict. Most likely, the best way to lessen the loss of life and property due to tsunamis is to avoid building infrastructures near areas where tsunamis will most likely to occur. Relocation of the community is needed if the area is a tsunami-prone. Also, a good early warning system is needed.

c. Landslides mostly occurs on areas having steep slopes and is strongly saturated with water. Also it will also occurs on areas having poor soil condition and vegetation. In order to mitigate landslides, there are lots of techniques used such geotechnical study in the area, mapping, determining areas that are landslide-prone and relocation of communities.

-Landslides can be triggered by heavy rainfall and ground motion events such as earthquakes. If there is a heavy rainfall, it will saturated the ground causing the soil to loose. If the soil can't hold the heavy amount of water, it will be dislodge and move. Also steeps slopes is a great factor in causing mass movements. Also, If these steep slopes saturated with water having poor soil condition is hit with a ground movement such as caused by earthquakes, it will most likely to cause landslide. Vegetation is also a great factor to mass movements. If steep slopes are not well vegetated, landslides will most likely to occur combining all the events and factors stated earlier. Landslides mostly occurs in areas having great amount of rainfall each year such as the Philippines. Philippines is located near the equator and is a tropical country. Maps are very useful to determine areas that are landslide prone.

 

4.What solutions would you propose for each of these hazards? Where would you live if you want to avoid these hazards?

In order to prevent landslide, engineering and geotechnical studies are needed to generate maps and provides structural mitigations for landslide and these maps can be used for relocating communities living in a landslide-prone area. Also, educating the people about these hazards are of a great help in lessening the damages caused by this natural hazard.

 

5.Where would you live if you want to avoid these hazards? Natural Hazards are difficult to predict when it will likely to occur. But we can determine where would it likely to occur by conducting geological studies in area such as in landslide-prone areas. Also, it is difficult to avoid hazards. It is better to live in areas that are less affected by the hazards. Yo will know this areas by conducting geological studies.
