There has been discussion concerning whether illegal drug use is self-medication for a mental health issue when they may be no access to care because of lack of insurance coverage, especially among lower-income males ( single males are not covered in most states by Medicaid unless defining as disabled or on SSI). You may choose yes or no and/or argue there is no connection.
Yes. I do agree that illegal drug use is self-medication for mental health issue to males who have low income and have limited insurance coverage. I have to agree that not all male in the category stated above use illegal drugs as self-medication but it is also noticeable that most of the male with mental health issues use illegal drugs. Self-medication refers to treating a health issue without consulting a doctor or a medical supervision for that matter. The central to the idea of self-medication is the notion that the lower- income males and those that lack insurance cover perceive their mental health symptoms as treatable and act purposefully to mitigate them through the use of illegal drugs. Following the lack of money to cater for medical care, these [people are motivated to take the simplest and most affordable way of dealing with the mental health symptoms hoping they will come to an end. most male who have mental issues take more alcohol which is socially perceived to reduces the effects of mental problem. more so, alcohol is widely available to individual without leaving out the safe access to the illicit drugs which only require a network of social relationship.
It is also important to note that the lower-income males with unmet need for mental health care perceives need for care, but they have found care either unavailable or they know that they will not be accepted in health institution. Whether or not the primary intention of these people was for self-medication, the repercussions are dangerous and this compromises their health as well as endangering lives. These people end up to be addicts this become another challenge other than the mental health issue.
