After watching Miss Saigon, do you think it is considered as Tragedy? or is is an example of Tragedy? If so, who among the characters is the Tragic Hero? Can you explain it?
Answer:
I would consider Miss Saigon as a Tragedy. Among the characters in the play, I would consider Kim as the tragic hero. Kim, being young Vietnamese woman orphaned by the Vietnam War who must work in a bar owned by a notorious man named The Engineer. This work lead her to meet Chris, which later became the love of her life. They were separated by the war and Chris eventually returned to the U.S making a promise that he will come back for her and bring her with him. For 3 years Kim carried and raised Chris child without knowing that Chris was already married in the U.S. In the end of the play, Kim decided to give Tam a life he deserves and she proceeded to take her own life.
I would consider Kim as the tragic hero because she has went through a lot of hurdles. From working in a bar to being affiliated with the sex industry just so she can fend for herself and eventually for Tam. In the end, she erased her existence in order to give her child a Chance to live comfortable with his father and her wife. Taking her own life and removing herself from the picture she dearly loved for her child and Chris was both tragic and beautiful.
