I have learned many values about life from my family. My parents believe that you should be committed to your spouse. I respect and believe in this, however, many of my friends have already gone through a divorce or choose not to get married. The family structure has changed. There are two parent households, blended families, single parent households, gay and lesbian parents and adoptive parents. (Follari, 2015).
Another important value that I recall is family. My family is very close to each other and we participate in many activities together. My mother stayed home and took care of my brother and me. My dad worked and provided for our family. Today's economics makes this difficult for families. We were expected to do our chores and homework before we could watch television or go outside and play. Now with both parents working and children involved in so many after school activities, this appears to have lost some of its importance.
Respect is another important value that I recall from my childhood. My family taught me to respect them and other adults. Although many of my friends laugh about it, I continue to say yes ma'am and yes sir to my elders. I was also taught to respect myself. I have discovered that by respecting yourself, others tend to follow your example. Sometimes peer groups can make this difficult for young adults. We all want to fit in and be part of a group.
Religious values were always a part of my family values. My grandparents and parents always attended church on Sunday. After church we all went to my grandparent's home for lunch. We sat and ate as a family, no television and certainly no phone. This is something that I continue to do as an adult. Families are finding it harder to commit to church on a regular basis because of jobs and other commitments. Children are often with different parents each weekend.
Education was always a priority in my family. We were taught to value getting an education, because my parents did not have the opportunity to go to college. Education is a gift and we were encouraged to pursue this opportunity. I do think that schools continue to stress the importance of getting an education. Frequently getting a good paying job means having a good education.
Community service was also an important value I recall learning from my family. We called it helping your neighbors. As an adult my brother continues to help mow the grass for our elderly neighbors. I currently am working two jobs and do not always have time to be neighborly. Due to busy schedules and demanding jobs being a good neighbor is becoming more difficult. Often people live in the same neighborhood or housing project and do not even know their neighbors name.
I feel blessed to have such a loving and supportive family. My family has taught me many values. I try extremely hard to live up to these values. Life does not always make this
an easy job for me. In my preschool classroom, I try to look at everyone as equal regardless of their values. It is not my job to be judgmental, but to accept each child as a unique individual.
